Liberal Studies Degree Offered at the Meijer Campus in Holland
Grand Valley State University and Grand Rapids Community College are collaborating to offer more educational opportunities for residents of the Holland area! Beginning in Fall 2008 GVSU will be offering the Liberal Studies Degree in Holland. Grand Rapids Community College will be providing some 100 and 200 level general education courses, while Grand Valley State University will provide 300 and 400 level courses in a variety of disciplines.
The Liberal Studies major is unique because it is interdisciplinary. Graduates of the Liberal Studies program find success in a variety of careers and graduate programs. Recent Liberal Studies graduates are working in management, education, international business, art museums, non-profit organizations, the Peace Corps, health fields, and more. Many Lib Studies graduates have gone on to graduate school in fields such as education, law, business, social work, philosophy, and public administration.

Course Offerings at the Meijer Campus
It is registration time again, and this year the course offerings at the Meijer Campus in Holland look a little different – Grand Valley State University and Grand Rapids Community College are collaborating to provide the community with a myriad of course offerings at the Meijer Campus. GRCC will offer some lower level general education course, allowing GVSU to provide more 300 and 400 level courses and offer degree completion in Liberal Studies. This increases the options you have in Holland!
Current GVSU students can easily take advantage of the GRCC course offerings – we’ve worked with GRCC to ensure that the courses offered are exact transfers into GVSU. For example:
GVSU Course = GRCC Course
PSY 101 = PY 201
SOC 201 = SO 254
PLS 102 = PS 110
MTH 097 = MA 104
MTH 110 = MA 107
These courses WILL NOT show up on Banner or the online schedule at www.gvsu.edu/register, and you will not be able to register for them online. Exact course offerings are available at the Front Desk in Holland and on the Meijer Campus in Holland website (www.gvsu.edu/holland) If you are interested in taking one of these courses, please contact an advisor (DECIDE ON EMAIL ADDRESS) and they can permit you into the course.
Some things to keep in mind:
*GRCC courses are easily transferred into GVSU
*GRCC courses will be taught at the Meijer Campus
*GRCC courses are offered at the GRCC tuition rate ($157 per credit hour for 07-08)
*GRCC courses count toward full/part time status for financial aid purposes (you must fill out a concurrent enrollment form)
*GRCC books are available to be purchased online
Please Note:
Your academic advisor and the staff and the Meijer Campus can assist you in filling out the appropriate forms to enroll in a GRCC course (registration, concurrent enrollment), however you will be responsible for abiding by the GRCC academic calendar (which is typically approximately one week different that the GVSU calendar). Call 331-3910 to schedule an appointement with an advisor. If you a current student interested in GRCC classes make an appointment with Kate. If you are interested in the Liberal Studies program make an appointment with Lisa.

Walk For Warmth
A group of Grand Valley Students and Staff joined together on February 16th to brave the cold and participate in the Community Action Agency’s annual Walk for Warmth. Walkers raised $3,429 and helped 17 families in Ottawa county. The money raised helped generate funds for heat related emergencies for families in Ottawa County. The walk began with a brief word from Senator and Representative Pete Hoekstra. The walk was a three mile stroll through downtown Holland with hot chocolate warming stations along the way to keep walkers warm. Everyone was bundled up in their Laker gear and had a great time. Thanks to all the walkers and others who donated money.
